You can! Because God is faithful.

You can! Because God is faithful.

This sermon is given by Rev Yong Tai Tong in Expo on 5th Sept. 2010.

3 key points
1) Every word He says is reliable
2) Every promise He gives will be realized
3) Every setback He allows has a reason

1) Every word He says is reliable
3 verses

Deuteronomy 7:6-11 (New International Version)

6 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.
7 The LORD did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. 8 But it was because the LORD loved you and kept the oath he swore to your forefathers that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands. 10 But
       those who hate him he will repay to their face by destruction;
he will not be slow to repay to their face those who hate him.
11 Therefore, take care to follow the commands, decrees and laws I give you today.

Numbers 23:19 (New International Version)

19 God is not a man, that he should lie,
nor a son of man, that he should change his mind.
Does he speak and then not act?
Does he promise and not fulfill?

Matthew 24:35 (New International Version)

35Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

2) Every promise He gives will be realized

Joshua 21:43-45 (New International Version)

43 So the LORD gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their forefathers, and they took possession of it and settled there. 44 The LORD gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their forefathers. Not one of their enemies withstood them; the LORD handed all their enemies over to them. 45 Not one of all the LORD's good promises to the house of Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.

3) Every setback He allows has a reason

 4 verses

Deuteronomy 32:4 (New International Version)

4 He is the Rock, his works are perfect,
and all his ways are just.
A faithful God who does no wrong,
       upright and just is he.

Job 23:10 (New International Version)

 10 But he knows the way that I take;
when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.

Romans 5:3-4 (New International Version)

3Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope.

Romans 8:28 (New International Version)

28And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Deuteronomy 7:6-8 (New International Version)

6 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.
7 The LORD did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. 8 But it was because the LORD loved you and kept the oath he swore to your forefathers that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

How God's faithfulness has been demonstrated

Genesis 15:13-14
13 Then the LORD said to him, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions.

Genesis 15:16a
16 In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here,

Genesis 15:18-21
18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram and said, "To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates- 19 the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, 20 Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, 21 Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites."

Truths that will help you experience God's blessings
1) You Can! Because God is faithful!

Romans 8:32 (New International Version)

32He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

2) You will! Provided You are faithful!

Deuteronomy 7:10-11

10 But
       those who hate him he will repay to their face by destruction;
he will not be slow to repay to their face those who hate him.
11 Therefore, take care to follow the commands, decrees and laws I give you today.

Exodus 34:5-7

5 Then the LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the LORD. 6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, "The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, 7 maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation."

  1. Sadly, I learnt that the 1st, 2nd and 3rd forefathers had much doubts of God’s Word, Promises and Setbacks (misfortunes). This resulted in their disobedience.

But God showed His great mercy upon the fourth descendants who were faithful.

Psalm 145:13 (NIV) – “The Lord is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made.”

Please bear this useful verses in your mind …… We should live by FAITH in the Lord, Jesus Christ… Please do believe in His Word, Promises and Setbacks. Thumb up to our Everlasting God.

  2. But God showed His great mercy upon (the fourth descendants) who were faithful.

I feel awkward to detect my typo on the said verse…..“the 4th descendants.”…..Sorry!

Amend from “the fourth descendants” to “the four generations of the descendants”

But God showed His great mercy upon the four generations of the descendants who were faithful.

Exodus 20:6 (NIV) – “but showing love to a thousand [generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments.”

God promises to maintain His everlasting love with thousands of generations.
